D.C. region getting eight Clean Marinas
The District of Columbia, National Park Service and the D.C. Clean Marina Committee will award the first Clean Marina designations to eight marinas and yacht clubs this weekend.

Each voluntarily meets a series of Clean Marina guidelines that exceed minimum federal and District of Columbia clean water law requirements. The recipients are:
 Capital Yacht Club
 Columbia Island Marina
 Eastern Power Boat Club
 James Creek Marina
 The Gangplank Marina
 Thompson Boat Club
 Washington Marina Company
 Washington Yacht Club

The marinas will be recognized during the 2006 National Clean Boating Campaign being held Saturday at James Creek Marina. The campaign is a public/private partnership with the National Park Service and the district’s new Department of Environment. It is sponsored by the Marine Environmental Educational Foundation.

During Saturday’s event, exhibits will demonstrate environmentally friendly boat operations. The Coast Guard Auxiliary will give free safety inspections to boats brought to the marina between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Also, MEEF will be training clean boating Dockwalkers to become environmental educators in the marinas or clubs where they keep their boats. The Dockwalkers will distribute thousands of clean boating kits to boaters throughout the district.

“We selected our nation’s capital as the celebration’s 2006 site to recognize the outstanding and rapid success of the district’s Clean Marina Program,” said Larry Innis, MEEF chairman, in a statement. “The eight marinas and clubs receiving the Clean Marina award represent 62 percent of the boating facilities in the district.”

Four more marinas and clubs are well into the award application process. They are: Anacostia Marina, Buzzards Point Marina, District Yacht Club and Seafarers Yacht Club. When they complete the program, 92 percent of the district’s marinas and clubs will be Clean Marina certified.

“No other state or region of the nation comes close to that record,” said Innis.
